WHAT IS ‘IRONY’

‘Irony’ is derived from a Greek word that means “one who dissembles.” There are three important kinds of irony, each of which signals a difference between appearance and reality.

Verbal irony involves figures of speech, in which what is said is not what is meant. There are several kinds of verbal irony.

Other Versions:

What a nice night for an evening.

Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories.

Some people say that I’m superficial, but that’s just on the surface.

On one hand, I’m indecisive; but on the other, I’m not.

If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s intolerance.

The world’s full of apathy, but I don’t care.

Perspective is in the eye of the beholder.

Prejudiced people are all alike.

Those who judge others will burn in Hell!

Exaggeration is not all it’s cracked up to be.

I’m still not sure if I understand ambiguity.

There’s no such thing as nonexistence.

Cooperation can only be reached if we work together.

As far as I’m concerned, treachery will sometimes bring loyalty into question.

It doesn’t matter what temperature a room is; it’s always room temperature.

Avoid cliches like the plague.

Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.

Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.

I always try to do things in chronological order.

Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

Death to all fanatics!

An oral contract isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

Don’t chew [or eat] with your mouth full.

It’s deja vu all over again.

I’d give my right arm to be ambidextrous!

I always wanted to be a procrastinator!

Rehab is for quitters!

Don’t be redundant by repeating yourself.

Some people type so fast that forget to include

I am becoming increasingly worried that there isn’t enough anxiety in my life.

I have this nagging fear that everyone is out to make me paranoid.

Free advice is worth what you paid for it.

Entropy just isn’t what it used to be.

I keep telling myself that I am a pathological liar, but I am not sure if I believe it.

Not only am I redundant & superfluous, but I also tend to use more words than necessary.

Honk if you love peace and quiet.

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Always be on the lookout for conspicuousness otherwise it’s hard to tell if someone is inconspicuous.

He doesn’t have much of a reputation, or so I’ve heard.

I disagree with unanimity.

I have my doubts about disbelief.

Avoid Alliteration. Always.

Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use.

I always wanted to be a procrastinator… never got around to it.

Freedom of speech is overrated.

WALKING HIKING TREKKING IN SNOWDONIA – BEST PLACES TO WALK

Snowdonia is one of the most enjoyable places to be either on a nice summers day or on a rainy, cold day (thats probably just me being a lover of the outdoors)

I have spent a lot of time up in and around Betws Y Coed, particularly around Aber Falls and Moel Winion. We did a overnight trek up here, there were 6 of us in the group, although this could easily be done in the one day we made it more fun by wild camping out in the open on Moel Winion which was our half way point.

We set out on the saturday morning at about 10.30, leaving Junction 13 off the A55. we parked up in front of the houses (where there is a small cafe) then began our walk up to the Aber Falls. This is quite a public place where people visit for the day and spend some time having a picnic and enjoying the fresh air. We took the higher path up to the falls which took us through the woods, the lower path is the more used path, as this is just gravelled and for people who are just having a casual stroll. After going through the woods we walked down a slight decline to the falls. As soon as we came out of the woodland we could see and hear the falls, they were incredible a must see if your in the area.

We went down to the falls and had a spot of lunch and just enjoyed the break here, a first class photo opportunity. We decided to get going again after about 15 minutes and made our way up a quite challenging broken slate path up towards the top of the falls themselves, although challenging, especially with all our trekking gear on our backs it was acheivable and we made it to the very top of the falls which offered amazing views-again the cameras were out!

We continued our walk up stream and crossed the stream (what goes on to make Aber Falls) we passed some amzing wildlife and even some wild horses just roaming around! To get to the tp of the falls we had been wlaking for about an hour – an hour and a half. we made it up a steady incline and walked around the front of the mountain, again incredible views that lead out to the sea, we saw nobody up there by this point it was so peaceful. We walked down the path which lead us to another stream which had a wlakway for easy crossing and then climbed Moel Winion where we would pitch up for the night. It took us about 2 hours to get to our half way point. As soon as the sun dropped behind the mountain the cold really set in. We had about zero degrees and this was in May so not the coldest time of the year, so make sure you take some warm clothing on this trek! (if staying overnight)

The stove got going and the camping equipment out, tents set up and uninterrupted views were on offer all around us (an amazing place to wake up to in the morning, definitely worth the camping)

The morning blessed us with beautiful sunshine which made the views look even more special. We continued up Moel Winion and over the ridge where we had a couple more photos and saw some ruins of an old building. We made our way over and strated our decline, this route offered views on Angelsy and took us along the coastal path all the way back to the car.

This took us about 4 hours in total so is definitely acheivable in a day but was very enjoyable spreading this over 2 days with the camping in the middle!

Lake Crafnant is also one of my favourite places to be, this is in Snowdonia National Park, the lake offers amazing trout fishing and walking, nearly a mile long and covering 63 acres this is a great 1.5 hour walk to be had in a day. There is also a great little cafe at the bigging, or if you can wait at ‘the end’ its best to work up to a nice hot chocolate with cream topping! they also do burgers, pies etc so you can grab a good lunch here too!

KAYAKING NORTH WALES

North Wales is amazing for a range of outdoor activities, I spend a lot of time up there Kayaking, especially near Old Colwyn at Rhos on Sea, there is a stretch of beach there that runs about 2 miles, its fantastic for kayaking.

You should remember to launch from the left hand side of the pier as there are rules on the water to where motor and sail power can go. If you go right of the pier you will find a few Jetskis and the odd powerboat, having said this it is usually a really quite bay so it rarely matters where abouts you go (although to stay within the rules I should point them out for you)

Rhos on Sea is especially good when the tide is going out/coming in on a stormy/windy day where you can have some amazing fun in the surf, admittedly you get thrown out a few times but as long as you have your paddle leash and a leash to you kayak (that I tie round my ankle) you will always be able to retrieve your kayak!

Just be careful to keep your eye on the tide it comes in quite quick and if its rough weather then the waves wash up the wall and when really bad often come over on to the road, make sure you aim for one of the launch pads, that way even if the tide is in there are places you can stil get out (making it a safe place to kayak). There are always people walking up and down the beach here or the prominade so you will be guaranteed to be seen, again this makes Rhos on Sea a safe option to kayak.

Rhos on Sea

There are many places within Betws Y Coed and Snowdonia, natural lakes etc that are beautiful on a sunny day, lots of wildlife and very peaceful. I must admit though, I do prefer the rougher weather where you can have some fun fighting with the waves.

kayaking

I’d be really interested to hear of any places that would be great for kayaking around this area, so please leave me some comments!

MARTIAL ARTS EQUIPMENT – ESSENTIAL SAFETY / PROTECTIVE GEAR

The essential bits of kit for any contact martial arts, essentially for sparring, semi contact and continous.

Gloves (10 ounce) – 10 ounce gloves are ideal for sparring, for training I would recommend 16oz gloves, as if you get used to punching with a heavier weight then when sparring your hands will be a lot lighter and faster when you need them!

boxing gloves

Gum Shield this is essential, it will only cost you a couple of pounds or at worst over £5 but there is no need to pay this much, look at it this way a few quid is a lot cheaper than a dental bill!

Headguard to absorb some of the impact you need a headguard, even if you are doing just light sparring, the normal headguards will cost only about £15 upwards, mine has the cheek guards on which is great as it absorbs some of the impact to the face and with wearing contact lenses also shelters the eyes slightly.

headguard

Foot Protection Im now on my second pair of boots, the fist pair I had for a few years and I was training about 3 times a week, these were the UPVC coated boots which looked better and are actually more expensive than the material type. The only thing with these is that they have a plastic kind of strap which goes beneath the foot which depending on the surface that you train on can be quite slippery and dont give you the confidence or speed to do high kicks due to the risk of slipping over. I now use the material kind and these are fantastic, I recommend these over the plastic coated boots, they allow more flexibility, ability to do high kicks and they are not as slippy under the foot. The best bit is, these are actually cheaper by up to about £5 than the plastic coated ones.

foot guards martial arts

Shin Guards I used to do a lot of scateboarding as a kid and bashed my shins so badly, they are now quite dented and slightly crooked so I have to wear shin guards, there is nothing worse than kicking an elbow with your shin, thats one knock that you will feel for a while! There are 2 kinds of shin guard one that covers the shin, the other which is a shin ‘instep’ that also protects the foot slightly, however no where near as good as having boots.

Groin Guard for the men out there, you dont need me to tell you how important the ‘juniors’ are, so look after them! Again a couple of options here, the basic ‘box’ like a what you use for playing cricket which allows you to remove the ‘cup’ which can be handy when training as you can wear the elastic pocket then add the cup inside when sparring. I used to use one like this however found that it wasnt very comfortable at all. I now use the kind where it has almost a lower abdominal protector too so it is slightly larger and really does work. A lot more confortable however, dont wear this when doing training drills, circuit training, warm up etc as when doing sit ups it can be slightly uncomfortable, I would certainly recommend this sort though for comfortableness and function.
