HOW TO CHOP OUT & FIT SOCKETS INTO WALLS

We have just chopped out all the sockets in the walls to house the back boxes. Here is a list of WHAT TO DO WHEN FITTING SOCKETS:

1). Plan where the sockets are going to be
2). Always plan to have more sockets in the house/walls than you might actually need – this way when it comes to selling your house the next people will have a lot of choice (they may place their furniture different to you)!
3). Mark out on the walls where the sockets are going to be (do this and seriously think where you would have the furniture, also do this a few weeks before you actually chop the sockets out as it may be that with this time to get used to where the sockets will be you may after this time change your mind slightly or decide to have extra sockets!
4). Make a template out of cardboard which you will be able to rest on the floor and up against the wall with the socket size cut out the middle, this way you can just draw round the inside of the template to mark out your socket, this will save so much time as you can just use this on each socket!
5). Stitch Drill – make a series of holes in the wall following your line that you have drawn. Drill far enough into the brick and through the top layer of plaster.
6). Bolster Chisel – use a bolster chisel and a lump hammer to start removing the inside of the socket area. Once through the plaster surface continue into the bricks. Make sure that you chop in deep enough to house the depth of the back box that you will be entering. Alternatively you can use an SDS/Hammer drill with a chisel bit fitted to remove the brick.
7). Make sure that you chop in aerial and telephone points too!!
8). Now you have chopped out the socket and have used the back box in place to test that it fits ok you can now screw this into place.
9). Screw Back Box – do this by using wall plugs and sufficicient sized screws to drill the back box into place.
10). Back box fitted – now use your template again to mark out your next socket… and repeat.

CHEAP LASER EYE SURGERY & TREATMENT – OPTICAL EXPRESS, OPTIMAX, LAZER EYE

Laser Eye Treatment is not cheap and after going to my FREE consultation with Optical Express I found this out, they advertise £395 per eye yet after my consultation I was quoted £1850 for the whole treament for both eyes as apparently I have a large pupil in one of my eyes meaning a more expensive treatment. I’d have been a fool to assume that it would actually be £395 per eye as this is purely for marketing purposes that they quote this and in most cases peoples eyes are slightly different and will need alternative treatment if they are correctable.

LASER EYE SURGERY

I found that this is an extremely competitive industry and that the sales process is a very hard sell. From repeatedly not letting up phone calls from Optical Express HQ in Scotland to after sales in the form of calls and emails still. Even on the day of the consultation it was a hard sell approach which I take a huge dislike to.

I am still very interested in laser eye treatment and managed to get the cost down slightly actually! I bartered quite a lot with their sales people as it was clear they did not want to lose a sale! I definitely saw an opoortunity here (even with my eyes)! I asked them what they thought Optimax would quote me and how I was interested in going for my FREE consultation with them to see what they had to say about my eyes. Immediately that hit a vunerable point and they were keen to keep me on their books. I received numurous emails of £200 and £150 discount vouchers, I explained to their sales consultants when they calle dme again, that his still wasnt enought as it was still so much more than I had prepared myself for after seeing their tv adverts! I managed to shave a little more off the price and at this point it was down to £1480 as apposed to the original £1850!

I completed my negotiating by asking what corporate discount there would be and how I wanted this sales person to gain the commisson from my sale (as they had by this point spent a lot of time on me and I had built up some useful rapport) I managed to squeeze another £46 from them as I said I worked for the NHS (which was a slight twist of the truth) but they had no way of finding out that htis wasnt the case.

My Final quote came to £1434.00 thats £416 cheaper than the original quote.

I would still like to save up and have this treatment done and beleive optical express to be a competant company to do this, I wonder what more vouchers they will throw my way knowing I am still interested!

HOW TO EASILY REMOVE WOODCHIP WALLPAPER!!

We have all probably experienced the difficulties of removing wall paper, especially WOODCHIP WALLPAPER!

During the renovation of our house, we removed one layer of normal wallpaper to reveal the dreaded woodchip wallpaper beneath. This is where the fun started. Here are the two ways in which it can be removed easily:

1). The fastest way is to purchase a steamer, you should be able to pick up a steamer for between £18 and £30 (Ebay is a good place to look for these, there are a few good options). I have a £20 steamer which does the job perfectly, simply fill it with boiling water, plug it in and off you go, just hold the steamer for a few seconds on to the paper and then with the scraper the paper should just fall off.

TOP TIP – start from the bottom, as steam rises it will help loosen the paper above whilst your doing the lower bit.

2). If you dont want to pay for a steamer or only have a small bit of wallpaper to remove then you can just brush the paper with water, leave it for about 10 minutes, then begin scraping (it might be that you need to give it 2 coats of water before scraping)

TOP TIP – which ever method you use, always score the wallpaper with a knife to allow the steam or water to get into and beneath the paper to help loosen it.

CHEAP SWIMMING POOLS – ABOVE GROUND POOLS 8FT. 10FT. 12FT

I bought a Bestway 8ft pool last year and it was fantastic, 8ft was plenty big enough and I got this for £35 then paid another £10 for a solar cover which did keep the heat in but mainly stopped things (leaves etc) dropping into the pool. I added chlorine however I did not have a filter/pump so the chlorine failed to circulate properly and therefore the water began to turn slightly green so I would recommend that you buy a pump/filter (only about £15 – Ebay or even part of a package now with the deals they have on above ground pools) this way the water will be constantly moving and circulating and the chlorine will do its job.

The 8ft pool would easily fit 4-6 adults in it, and with the top being inflatable it acted as a great head rest whilst you bathed and relaxed in the pool.

I made sure to put a thick blanket underneath the pool before filling it with water as I wanted to make sure that the base of the pool was protected from any sharp objects (as I had the pool on the patio) Unfortunately for me the only place I could have it was in quite a shaded end of the garden so the pool didnt heat up as much as I would have liked and when you are putting nearly 3,000 ltrs of water into an 8ft pool it will take some heating! So try your best to keep it in a place that is in the sun most of the day, having said that you can buy heaters which only cost about £30-40, another tip – if you place the pool on the grass it will kill the grass beneath it and you will end up with a patch.

I have shown a few links below which takes you through to the types and sizes of the pools you can buy so have a look! a word of warning- if you are looking at buying a 8ft pool then dont pay over £35 unless it has a pump/filter with it, the price of pools have come down slightly over the last year so you can definitely ge some good deals now.

WHAT IS ‘IRONY’

‘Irony’ is derived from a Greek word that means “one who dissembles.” There are three important kinds of irony, each of which signals a difference between appearance and reality.

Verbal irony involves figures of speech, in which what is said is not what is meant. There are several kinds of verbal irony.

Other Versions:

What a nice night for an evening.

Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories.

Some people say that I’m superficial, but that’s just on the surface.

On one hand, I’m indecisive; but on the other, I’m not.

If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s intolerance.

The world’s full of apathy, but I don’t care.

Perspective is in the eye of the beholder.

Prejudiced people are all alike.

Those who judge others will burn in Hell!

Exaggeration is not all it’s cracked up to be.

I’m still not sure if I understand ambiguity.

There’s no such thing as nonexistence.

Cooperation can only be reached if we work together.

As far as I’m concerned, treachery will sometimes bring loyalty into question.

It doesn’t matter what temperature a room is; it’s always room temperature.

Avoid cliches like the plague.

Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.

Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.

I always try to do things in chronological order.

Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

Death to all fanatics!

An oral contract isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

Don’t chew [or eat] with your mouth full.

It’s deja vu all over again.

I’d give my right arm to be ambidextrous!

I always wanted to be a procrastinator!

Rehab is for quitters!

Don’t be redundant by repeating yourself.

Some people type so fast that forget to include

I am becoming increasingly worried that there isn’t enough anxiety in my life.

I have this nagging fear that everyone is out to make me paranoid.

Free advice is worth what you paid for it.

Entropy just isn’t what it used to be.

I keep telling myself that I am a pathological liar, but I am not sure if I believe it.

Not only am I redundant & superfluous, but I also tend to use more words than necessary.

Honk if you love peace and quiet.

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Always be on the lookout for conspicuousness otherwise it’s hard to tell if someone is inconspicuous.

He doesn’t have much of a reputation, or so I’ve heard.

I disagree with unanimity.

I have my doubts about disbelief.

Avoid Alliteration. Always.

Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use.

I always wanted to be a procrastinator… never got around to it.

Freedom of speech is overrated.

WALKING HIKING TREKKING IN SNOWDONIA – BEST PLACES TO WALK

Snowdonia is one of the most enjoyable places to be either on a nice summers day or on a rainy, cold day (thats probably just me being a lover of the outdoors)

I have spent a lot of time up in and around Betws Y Coed, particularly around Aber Falls and Moel Winion. We did a overnight trek up here, there were 6 of us in the group, although this could easily be done in the one day we made it more fun by wild camping out in the open on Moel Winion which was our half way point.

We set out on the saturday morning at about 10.30, leaving Junction 13 off the A55. we parked up in front of the houses (where there is a small cafe) then began our walk up to the Aber Falls. This is quite a public place where people visit for the day and spend some time having a picnic and enjoying the fresh air. We took the higher path up to the falls which took us through the woods, the lower path is the more used path, as this is just gravelled and for people who are just having a casual stroll. After going through the woods we walked down a slight decline to the falls. As soon as we came out of the woodland we could see and hear the falls, they were incredible a must see if your in the area.

We went down to the falls and had a spot of lunch and just enjoyed the break here, a first class photo opportunity. We decided to get going again after about 15 minutes and made our way up a quite challenging broken slate path up towards the top of the falls themselves, although challenging, especially with all our trekking gear on our backs it was acheivable and we made it to the very top of the falls which offered amazing views-again the cameras were out!

We continued our walk up stream and crossed the stream (what goes on to make Aber Falls) we passed some amzing wildlife and even some wild horses just roaming around! To get to the tp of the falls we had been wlaking for about an hour – an hour and a half. we made it up a steady incline and walked around the front of the mountain, again incredible views that lead out to the sea, we saw nobody up there by this point it was so peaceful. We walked down the path which lead us to another stream which had a wlakway for easy crossing and then climbed Moel Winion where we would pitch up for the night. It took us about 2 hours to get to our half way point. As soon as the sun dropped behind the mountain the cold really set in. We had about zero degrees and this was in May so not the coldest time of the year, so make sure you take some warm clothing on this trek! (if staying overnight)

The stove got going and the camping equipment out, tents set up and uninterrupted views were on offer all around us (an amazing place to wake up to in the morning, definitely worth the camping)

The morning blessed us with beautiful sunshine which made the views look even more special. We continued up Moel Winion and over the ridge where we had a couple more photos and saw some ruins of an old building. We made our way over and strated our decline, this route offered views on Angelsy and took us along the coastal path all the way back to the car.

This took us about 4 hours in total so is definitely acheivable in a day but was very enjoyable spreading this over 2 days with the camping in the middle!

Lake Crafnant is also one of my favourite places to be, this is in Snowdonia National Park, the lake offers amazing trout fishing and walking, nearly a mile long and covering 63 acres this is a great 1.5 hour walk to be had in a day. There is also a great little cafe at the bigging, or if you can wait at ‘the end’ its best to work up to a nice hot chocolate with cream topping! they also do burgers, pies etc so you can grab a good lunch here too!
